Former Givenchy Creative Director Riccardo Tisci will become Burberry’s new Chief Creative Officer as of March 12 2018, the company announced early this morning. Tisci, who left Givenchy on January 31 2018 after working for the brand for 12 years, will take over Christopher Bailey’s position. Bailey resigned from Burberry in October 2017, after 17 years working with the brand. Following the departure of former Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts in 2014, Bailey unusually took on the role as the brand’s President.

Tisci’s appointment suggests a move back to a more traditional division of responsibilities at the label. He will direct all of the British brand’s collections from its headquarters in London, and will present his first collection in September 2018. He will work closely with Burberry’s CEO Marco Gobbetti, who hired the Italian fashion designer for the role at Givenchy in February 2005 after admiring his first collection during the Autumn/Winter 2005 season in Milan.

Born in Taranto, Italy, Tisci studied at Design Istituto d’Arte Applicata in Cantu until he was 17, going on to graduate from London’s Central Saint Martins renowned masters programme in 1999. At Givenchy, he was widely praised for rejuvenating the LVMH-owned fashion house, which regained commercial popularity after he began directing its women’s haute couture and ready-to-wear lines.

“Riccardo is one of the most talented designers of our time. His designs have an elegance that is contemporary and his skill in blending streetwear with high fashion is highly relevant to today’s luxury consumer,” said Gobbetti, in a statement regarding the announcement. “Riccardo’s creative vision will reinforce the ambitions we have for Burberry and position the brand firmly in luxury.”

Tisci also shared a statement regarding his new position: “I am honoured and delighted to be joining Burberry as its new Chief Creative Officer and reuniting with Marco Gobbetti,” the designer wrote on Instagram. “I have an enormous respect for Burberry’s British heritage and global appeal and I am excited about the potential of this exceptional brand.”
