Jonathan Tuckey Designs Malin+Goetz’s New London Outposts
By Tamara AkcayMatthew Malin and Andrew Goetz have recently opened two stores in London. After New York and Los Angeles, they chose Monmouth Street in Covent Garden and Upper Street in Islington to display their minimalistic beauty products. The packaging, colours and typography are subtle, whilst the facade and the interior of the shops are original and distinctive from one another. Jonathan Tuckey (Egg Space at Dover Street Market, Kings Cross Gasholders and Southbank Centre Archive Studio), who is known to remodel and radically transform old buildings into modern spaces, is responsible for the design of both stores.
On Upper Street, Malin+Goetz takes over the ground floor of a Victorian building. From the outside, the entrance features a curved glass exterior. Inside, the products are displayed on a bespoke American Douglas Fir shelves, and an apothecary counter dating from the 19th century.
‘On Upper Street, the store has a warm, down-to-earth and local feel about it,’ says Tuckey.
Each Malin+Goetz store has a unique concept although they share the same purpose: to transpose the charm of an apothecary into a minimalistic modern space.
