‘Hotel for Artists’ launches in Wood Green
By Something CuratedLondon’s first “hotel for artists” opened its doors this past weekend within a derelict Art Deco building in Wood Green.
Nick Hartwright, the founder of this not-for-profit 22-room space, is intent on seeing it flourish with a community feel and function; With a bar, restaurant, and exhibition/performance space all fitted within, Green Rooms seems ripe for both local and visiting creatives. Whilst the bar and restaurant has been open since early spring, the rooms – which vary from £18 for a bunk to £80 for a studio, for those working in the arts – have just opened in late May. The pricing of rooms will not fluctuate with seasons, and if you’re not the artsy type but still want in – fret not. Rooms will be available to doctors, lawyers, businessmen and all other types for a modest surcharge of £10.
As a former electricity office, Green Rooms was masterfully renovated by the London-based multidisciplinary architecture studio SODA, whose previous clients include the SoHo house and Ape & Bird. SODA has transformed this mid-30s structure into a tasteful blend of old-meets-new design. Vintage 30s and 40s British furniture meets bespoke interiors done by Lambs Conduit-based Folk.
The ground-floor eatery will rotate styles and cuisines bi-annually as part of its chef-in-residency programme – the first being Esteban Arboleda, founder of Colombian Street Kitchen. The idea itself is the conception of Nick Hartwright, who opened the The Mill Co. Project in a 60s Rose Lipman Building in Haggerston. It offers those in the creative industry affordable workspaces – from figure drawing classes to meeting space, workshops, lecture and conference rooms, and offices.
