Charles Jeffrey : Flamboyant Nightlife and Menswear Impresario
By Something CuratedCharles Jeffrey is a cultural force. Not only is he a menswear fashion designer but also a nightlife ‘ring leader’ who knows how to please a crowd and to draw inspiration from his flamboyant lifestyle and Loverboy events.
Scottish Born Jeffrey graduated from the MA Fashion at Central St Martins in 2015. He funded his tuition fees by hosting several club nights called LOVERBOY at Vogue Fabrics location in Dalston . What started out as a birthday party idea where anyone could come and have fun as long as they were sporting an original outfit, quickly became a cult event attended by the emerging creative cognoscenti. Jeffrey, looking to revive and romanticising the “old days” when dressing up was part of going out; felt the need to bring back this diminishing social ritual. LOVERBOY soon became the gathering of London’s emerging fashion elite, framing Jeffrey as a the gatekeeper of events for a crowd ranging from drag queens to artists.
Aside from his presence on the nightlife scene, Jeffrey brings the same flair and inspiration to his primary occupation as a menswear designer. He has been selected for the second time this year to present his collection at London Collections : Men at MAN, part of Fashion East which was created by Lulu Kennedy with the purpose of discovering and promoting the new faces of London’s fashion scene. He will be on show at MAN alongside designers Feng Chen Wang the Chinese-born RCA grad and Swedish-born almost RCA-grad Per Götesson on June 10th 2016.
Last season, Jeffrey introduced a line of “drunk tailoring” in collaboration with Saville Row’s Chittleborough & Morgan. Known for his flair rather and adopting structural approach to fashion, the clothes are intentionally outsized and unfitted to resemble vintage pieces that would be more usually stocked at preloved shop. The flamboyant creative director is otherwise most known for taking inspiration from his nightlife events. His studio literally sits above Vogue Fabric Dalston above where his notorious nightclub events are thrown.
