The New Road Residence is an eclectic 17th-century townhouse. The meticulously refurbished 1797 Georgian townhouse in Whitechapel is available for short and long term stays, with stylish open plan living areas and accommodation for up to six guests. Formerly a linen merchant’s store, its current transformation is the innovation of James Brown and Christie Fels, of the Shoreditch-based lifestyle and fashion boutique Hostem. Their aesthetic inclinations towards mid-century furniture, and the more organic movements in contemporary art, meet in the striking 265 square meter space.

Designed as a destination for those seeking a leisurely London break of a different sort, the three-storey self-contained residence is a serene design haven arranged for comfort and relaxation. Reflecting the same polished, artisanal imperfection that defines the products found at Hostem’s store, now Brown and Fels extend their signature pared-down aesthetic with the furniture at New Road; notable pieces include, Valentin Loellmann’s blackened oak stools and Pierre Jeanneret’s famed writing desk. Through the house, a thoughtful selection of contemporary artworks curated by London gallerist Stuart Shave are on display, including pieces by Richard Tuttle and Paul Lee.

Through minimal structural intervention, an aesthetic overhaul has transformed the Residence into a rustic and elegant haven, with the utmost attention given to comfort and detail. The residency’s exclusion of a television seems fitting to the setting offered here. Along with a thoughtfully curated selection of books, there is an impressive wine cellar, selected by Jérémie Cometto-Lingenheim of Primeur. The New Road Residence is rented in its entirety with no minimum stay imposed on guests.
