Lagos Heatwave
By Yagazie Emezi, Momo Hassan-Odukale and Daniel ObaweyaIn the face of sweltering temperatures, Lagos Heatwave is an ode to the city’s “resilience and unwavering commitment to glamour,” creative director Daniel Obaweya shares with SC. In Lagos, the heat isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a character in its own right. But so is fashion. “For this project, we really wanted to emphasise the ridiculous heat we are currently facing in Lagos while blending Lagos fashion culture,” photographer Yagazie Emezi tells. The series takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to climate and clothing, playing with contradiction—languid models draped in knitwear and leather despite the scorching conditions.
Styled by Momo Hassan-Odukale, the cast features Ashley Okoli, DEELA, and Samiko Odunukwe—each model embodying a cool defiance under the West African sun. “Heatwave is about the heat, the sweat, the sun, survival, and the creative resilience that pushes through it all,” Momo explains. “We shot at my grandma’s house, which added a personal, nostalgic layer.” Celebrating the expansive vision of Nigerian designers, who create not just for this climate but for global markets, Lagos Heatwave is a reflection of the beauty, tension, and creative grit that define the city.
