We didn’t speak the same language but we didn’t need to. He played record after record, sat in his chair smoking cigarettes, flicking his hand and tapping his foot to the beat. There was something warm about this place, this man, this moment. In a city I’d never seen, surrounded by the history of their music that I knew little about. In his mother tongue my friend asked him if I could take his picture; he looked at me and replied in Arabic, ‘you already asked me with your eyes’.
